A Licensed Plumber Must be Included on The Building Permit

There are two subcontractors, in addition to the General Contractor, that must be included on all Building Permit applications: the electrician and the plumber.

Safety is of Primary Importance

Using a licensed plumber ensures the safety of your basement finishing project. Water damage is one of the costliest repairs you may face as a homeowner. This is especially true for your finished basement. If the basement floods due to poor plumbing, there are usually only two ways to get the water out. Through a small floor drain in the mechanical room or a pump to get the water out of the basement. Either way, water will sit longer, causing damage to the carpet, baseboards, and drywall. Usually, the carpet and baseboards are a complete loss, and the drywall needs extensive repairs. Occasionally, the water damage is so bad that the framing and insulation also need repair.

Using a licensed plumber and getting all required inspections goes a long way toward safeguarding your basement from potential flooding. A small leak or improper fitting can cause a surprising amount of damage in a short period. Using a licensed plumber mitigates this risk and allows you to enjoy your basement finish with minimal concern.

Is a Licensed Plumber Expensive?

The cost of using a licensed plumber is mitigated slightly more than using an unlicensed handyperson or unlicensed worker to do the project. The cost to benefit is minor compared to the problems that can occur using a less-than-qualified worker to do the job.

The cost for a licensed plumber varies but is usually within a specific range. The pricing for various services is as follows:

  • Standard plumbing connections: $300
  • Laundry connections: $500
  • Installation of a standard tub/shower combo: $200
  • Connecting a dishwasher: $100
  • Water line for a refrigerator: $50
  • Installation of disposal: $75

This pricing is reasonable and fair for what you get. Plus, it gives you peace of mind that the project is done right.
