Utah Basement Finishers did a great job finishing my basement in a timely and affordable manner. They finished everything well above my expectations and treated me like their top client, even though I know they had a lot of other projects they were finishing at the same time that probably would have taken priority over my smaller basement. 10/10 would recommend!

We waited until the last minute to start our basement finish. We need more bedrooms due to another baby being on the way. We had our bid within 3 days and started the basement about 2 weeks later. Austin was great. He helped us figure out a couple of details in the framing that really worked out well. The basement was always clean. What a great team. Utah Basement Finishers completed the basement 2 weeks ahead of schedule which was very helpful. We’re so grateful that they responded quickly and that their bid was fair so that we could finish our basement.

Basement Home Gym FAQs

Planning a gym in your basement? Here are answers to common questions about space, flooring, equipment, ventilation, cost, and designing a gym around the way you work out.

Quick Answer:
It depends on how you work out. A small area can be enough for basic workouts, while weights, racks, and cardio equipment will require more room.

Detailed Answer:
You don’t need a huge basement to create a home gym you’ll actually use. If your workouts mostly involve dumbbells, a bench, yoga, or bodyweight exercises, you can do a lot with a relatively small area. Larger equipment such as a treadmill, rowing machine, power rack, or cable machine will naturally require more space.

The important part is planning around your equipment rather than simply setting aside a certain number of square feet. We look at the size of the equipment, how much room you need to use it comfortably, and how you’ll move through the gym.

If you’re finishing the entire basement, we can also help you decide how much space makes sense to dedicate to the gym without taking unnecessary room away from bedrooms, family areas, storage, or other features you want.

Quick Answer:
Rubber flooring is one of the best options for most home gyms, especially if you plan to use weights or heavy equipment.

Detailed Answer:
The right flooring depends on what you’ll be doing in the room. Rubber is a popular choice because it holds up well to exercise equipment, provides some cushioning, and helps protect the floor underneath. It’s especially useful around weight racks, benches, and free-weight areas.

You also don’t necessarily have to use the same flooring throughout the entire gym. For example, you might use rubber in the weight-training area while choosing a different surface for stretching, cardio, or another part of the room. We can help you choose an option that makes sense for both your workouts and your budget.

Quick Answer:
Usually, yes. The layout just needs to account for your ceiling height and the types of workouts and equipment you plan to use.

Detailed Answer:
A lower basement ceiling doesn’t automatically rule out a home gym. Treadmills, stationary bikes, benches, dumbbells, and plenty of other equipment can work well in a typical basement.

Ceiling height becomes more important if you’re planning a tall power rack, overhead presses, jumping exercises, pull-ups, or equipment that raises you significantly off the floor. These are things we want to know about before deciding where everything should go.

We can measure the available height and plan the gym around those limitations. Sometimes something as simple as changing the location of a piece of equipment can make the room work much better.

Quick Answer:

Yes. In fact, knowing what equipment you plan to use makes it much easier to design a gym that works well.

Detailed Answer:
If you already own your equipment, we can use its dimensions when planning the room. If you haven’t purchased it yet, knowing what you intend to buy is still helpful. A power rack has very different space requirements than a treadmill, exercise bike, or set of adjustable dumbbells.

We also consider the space you need around each piece of equipment. It’s easy to fit everything on paper and then discover that there isn’t enough room to load a barbell, adjust a bench, or comfortably walk between machines.

Your workout style matters too. Someone building a weightlifting gym will have different needs than someone who primarily does yoga, martial arts, cycling, or cardio.

Planning for those details from the beginning helps make sure you end up with a gym that feels comfortable to use rather than simply a room where all the equipment fits.

Quick Answer:
Proper heating, cooling, and airflow can make a big difference, especially during harder workouts. The cheapest way to stay cool is with mounted fans you can position to blow on you during workouts.

Detailed Answer:
Basements tend to stay cooler than the rest of the house, which can actually be an advantage for a home gym. Once you start exercising, however, a closed room without enough airflow can become uncomfortable pretty quickly.

When planning the basement, we can look at the room’s HVAC and ventilation needs along with the rest of the space. The goal is to create a gym that stays comfortable throughout the year rather than treating heating and cooling as an afterthought.

Quick Answer:
Absolutely. We can plan for mirrors, TVs, speakers, extra outlets, lighting, storage, and other features as part of the gym design.

Detailed Answer:
One advantage of designing the gym while finishing your basement is that we can plan these details before the walls are finished. If you know where you want a wall-mounted TV, speakers, or other electronics, electrical and wiring can be placed where they’re actually needed.

Mirrors can also be integrated into the design instead of added as an afterthought. Depending on the gym, you may want a large mirrored wall or just a smaller section where you can check your form.

Lighting is another detail worth thinking about. A basement gym should feel bright and comfortable without having lights positioned where they’re constantly in your eyes while you’re lying on a bench or mat.

We can also plan storage for smaller equipment such as dumbbells, resistance bands, yoga mats, towels, and other gear.
