Frequently Asked Questions

Answers for Spanish Fork homeowners.

Quick Answer:
Yes. If you’re not ready to finish the entire basement at once, we can help you plan the project in phases so you can complete the spaces you need now and leave the rest for later.

Detailed Answer:
Finishing your basement in phases can make sense if you have a larger basement or simply don’t need every room right away. You might start with a family room, bathroom, and bedroom, then come back later to add a home theater, gym, kitchenette, or other space.

If you already have an idea of what you’d like to add later, let us know when we’re planning the first phase. We can look at the whole basement and make sure what we build now won’t get in the way of those future plans.

For example, if you know you’d like to add a kitchenette later, we can consider where it will go and how that may affect the surrounding rooms. A little planning now can save you from having to redo finished work when you’re ready for the next phase.

We can help you decide what makes sense to finish now and what can easily be added later based on your budget and how you plan to use the basement. A basement consultation and bid is free, and we can really help you dial in a process that will work for your basement.

Quick Answer:
Most basements lend themselves to a specific layout. The original home builder put things like bathroom plumbing and the furnace room in a specific place, and we need to work around what’s there. We’ve done this for years and can see a layout that will work and help you understand an optimal layout for your basement during our initial free consultation.

Detailed Answer:
Beyond the general layout, you may ask what additional features I can fit in this space and whether I have the budget for them. A common request is for a kitchenette or wet bar. We can usually include one, but sometimes the drain for the plumbing can be an issue if the desired location isn’t close to an existing plumbing stack. We can rework the sub-rough plumbing, but this is an expensive solution, and it might be better to consider an alternative placement.

From there, we look at the basement itself. The location of the stairs, windows, plumbing, furnace, and other utilities can affect where rooms go. For example, keeping a new bathroom closer to existing plumbing may be a better option than putting it on the opposite side of the basement.

You also don’t have to fill every corner with another room. Sometimes leaving the family room a little bigger or adding some extra storage makes the basement more useful than trying to fit one more bedroom into the floor plan.

We’re happy to go over the layout options with you and create a drawing of what we decide on. Our goal is to optimize the basement based on the current layout, your plans, and your budget. We can help you balance all three and get a basement layout that you’ll love.

Quick Answer:
Luxury vinyl plank and carpet are both good choices for a finished basement. The best option depends on the room and how you plan to use it.

Detailed Answer:
Luxury vinyl plank, or LVP, works well in areas that get a lot of use. It’s durable, easy to clean, and a good choice for family rooms, hallways, kitchens, and laundry rooms.

Carpet is popular in bedrooms and living areas because it’s warmer and softer underfoot. It can also help with sound, which is nice in a basement where kids are playing or the TV is on.

You can also use a combination of both. Many homeowners choose LVP for the main living areas and walkways, then add carpet to bedrooms or other rooms where they want something softer and more comfortable.

Short Answer:
Yes. Built-in storage helps your basement stay organized and functional for years to come.

Detailed Answer:
Storage is one of the most overlooked features in basement design, yet it’s one of the most valuable. Adding dedicated storage areas gives you a place for holiday decorations, sporting equipment, seasonal clothing, keepsakes, and household supplies without filling your family room or bedrooms with clutter.

When we look at most basements for the initial bid and consultation, there are a lot of items in the basement that need to be stored. This is usually not a top priority when we discuss the basement layout, but it should be. We all have a lot of stuff and, good storage helps us to manage that stuff and keep organized. We can help you with suggestions for storage that works with the space you have and how you plan to use it.

Quick Answer:
Natural light in most basements is minimal. The window wells are deep and don’t let in a lot of light. The best way to brighten up a basement is to add more lights and to use bright paint colors like white.

Detailed Answer:
Basements naturally have less sunlight than the rest of the house, but they don’t have to feel dark. Recessed lighting is a great place to start because it gives you even light throughout the room without taking up ceiling space. Lighter paint colors can help, too.

The layout also matters. Keeping the main living areas open can make the basement feel larger and gives light fewer walls to compete with. If you have windows, it also helps to plan the rooms around them so you’re getting as much natural light as possible.

Finishes can pull everything together. Light or medium-tone flooring, white trim, and simple wall colors can keep the basement from feeling heavy or closed in. You don’t have to make everything white just a few good choices can make the basement feel a lot more like the rest of your home.

Short Answer:
Your best bet is the basics: family room, bathroom, and bedrooms. Kitchens are expensive and don’t get used. Theater rooms are overdone and a huge TV works just as well. We can help you get the best bang for your buck with the budget you have.

Detailed Answer:
Finishes are also important. Carpet is cheaper than LVP or tile. One-tone paint is cost-effective. Stick with nice standard hardware finishes. Find ways to save rather than to spend. We’ve done this for 17 years and know what adds value and what looks nice but doesn’t really matter. If you’re on a tight budget we can help. We’ll go over all of this with you in your free consultation and bid and help you to figure out how to get the most out of your basement and still stay within your budget.

Utah Basement Finishers did a great job finishing my basement in a timely and affordable manner. They finished everything well above my expectations and treated me like their top client, even though I know they had a lot of other projects they were finishing at the same time that probably would have taken priority over my smaller basement. 10/10 would recommend!

We waited until the last minute to start our basement finish. We need more bedrooms due to another baby being on the way. We had our bid within 3 days and started the basement about 2 weeks later. Austin was great. He helped us figure out a couple of details in the framing that really worked out well. The basement was always clean. What a great team. Utah Basement Finishers completed the basement 2 weeks ahead of schedule which was very helpful. We’re so grateful that they responded quickly and that their bid was fair so that we could finish our basement.
