5 Creative Ideas for Your Midway, Utah Basement Finish
Turn That Unused Space Into Your Family’s Favorite Place
If your basement’s sitting empty (or just storing boxes), you’re not alone. Many Midway homes have large, unfinished basements with tons of potential space that could be doing so much more for you and your family.
The good news? With the right plan, that cold concrete box can become one of the best parts of your home. We’ve completed over 1,100 basements across Utah, and we’ve seen firsthand how much a well-designed space can transform the way families live.
Here are a few of our favorite Utah Basement Finishing ideas to help spark your imagination.
- A Comfy, All-Purpose Family Room
A basement family room gives everyone a place to relax, play, and just be together.
• Built-ins for toys, books, and board games
• A cozy sectional and a big TV for movie nights
• Room for kids to sprawl out or build forts
It’s the perfect spot to hang out on a rainy day or escape the summer heat.
- A Quiet Home Office
Working from a makeshift home office is challenging. Interruptions are common. Calls are difficult. Being out in the open seems to invite family members to stop by for a quick chat. A home office is an ideal space to focus and get work done.
- Even a small space, 12×12, can serve as an excellent space for a home office
- Sound-dampening insulation isn’t too expensive and can make the office even better
- A locking door can be a great help when you really need to concentrate on an important project or phone call.
We can help you set everything up so that your office runs well, is quiet, and efficient.
3. A Basement Aparment
Are you looking for additional rental income? How about space for an aging family member? Basement apartments are a great addition to any home. The government has relaxed many of the restrictions for basement apartments. The only challenging requirements they have are:
- Off-street parking- at least one stall
- A separate entrance to the home for ingress in case of an emergency
- Minor building requirements that are not expensive to increase the fire safety of the apartment.
This is an excellent addition to any home, adding significant value when you decide to sell.
4. A home theater or Media Room
Home theaters from 10 years ago were dedicated spaces designed just for watching movies, sporting events, and the like. We can still do that, but more often, what our clients want is a multi-functional room with significant theater-like components. This usually includes a massive television and a Bluetooth sound system. Some still use projectors, but with the advent of super-high-resolution TVs, this is becoming increasingly less common. A few components that can make your home media room a success:
- Some soundproofing between the floors so that you’re not rattling dishes on the main floor
- Comfortable seating. There are sectionals explicitly made for movie watching, and speaking from personal experience, they’re great!
- Excellent speakers. Opt for the best option that fits within your budget. They’re worth it.
Not only will this media area become the most fun part of your home, but it will also add significantly to the resale value of your home.
5. A Home Gym
These were extremely popular during the COVID-19 pandemic and have since lost some of their popularity. In my opinion, they’re still one of the best uses of space for a basement. We all need more exercise, and the excuses for not exercising are often as simple as, “I don’t have time”. Having a home gym makes it easy to exercise when you do have time, and walking to the basement is much quicker than driving to the gym. Some components that will make your gym great without breaking the bank:
- A rubber floor will help with weight lifting and cushion all of your gym activities
- We can add backing to the areas where weight racks will go to make sure they’re secure
- Options like a few mirrors, fans, and good lighting are very inexpensive and a great addition to a home gym
This is a great way to achieve your fitness goals and turn your basement into a valuable and functional part of your home.
